Three days after falling to the George Rogers Clark Lady Cardinals, the Middlesboro Lady Jackets fell to the visiting Clay County Lady Tigers 10-3 on Monday.

“We just didn’t hit the ball well,” said Middlesboro coach Petie Gilbert. “Outside of Aubrey’s home runs, we just couldn’t get anything going on the sticks. We only had four total hits on the day. We made too many errors and things that we have to correct as soon as we can. Time is running out on the season. Now is when we need to play like we are capable of playing.”

The lone bright spot for the Lady Jackets through the first five innings was an Aubrey Sowders home run in the first inning that gave Middlesboro their only lead of the game at 1-0.

Sowders and Lindsay Buis were the only Lady Jackets with hits on the day, with two each. Both of Sowders’ hits were home runs, including a two-run shot in the sixth inning, driving in Frazier. Sowders drove in every run for the Lady Jackets during the game with three RBI.

Brianda Owens started on the mound for the Lady Tigers, pitching a complete game. Through seven innings Owens allowed only four hits, three runs (all earned) with one walk and 11 strikeouts.

Clay County amassed eight hits on the day and 10 runs, six of which were unearned. Owens, Shelby Phillips, Emma Hurd, Kimberlyn Mills and Maddie Frazier all had one RBI each for the Lady Tigers. Owens, Phillips and Hurd had two hits each.

With the victory, the Lady Tigers improved to 25-2 on the season and sit at the top spot in the 13th Region standings. With the loss, the Lady Jackets moved to 12-15 on the year and rest steady at sixth in the 13th Region standings.

The Lady Tigers were slated to take on Madison Central on the road Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Lady Jackets played the Whitley County Lady Colonels Tuesday at home.
