A record 33 student-athletes have been inducted into Lincoln Memorial University’s Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society for the 2019-20 academic year. The third class to be inducted into the school’s Eta Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma is the largest to date and boasts an impressive average GPA of 3.73.

The Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society is a nonprofit organization that was established to recognize college student-athletes who excel both on and off the field of competition. The organization was founded in 1996 by then DePauw University head football coach Nick Mourouzis. His goal was to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime.

The Eta Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma at LMU was brought about by the efforts of Dr. Ahleasha McNeal, faculty athletics representative (FAR) and assistant professor of sport management, the LMU Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), and others during the 2017-18 academic year. In addition to a regular honor society, members get to wear a special sash on their gowns at the graduation ceremony.

The criteria to become a member of the Eta Chapter are a graduating senior in that calendar year and at least a 3.5 GPA. These are stricter than the national criteria, which allow juniors or seniors with a 3.4 GPA or higher.

The inaugural class consisted of 27 student-athletes from 13 different sports and was inducted on April 26, 2018. The 2018-29 class, inducted in April of 2018, was comprised of 29 student-athletes from 14 different Railsplitter programs.

This year’s class represents 16 LMU teams.
