As the regular season quickly comes to a close, a few local basketball players have proven to be at the top of their game this year. Bell County’s Talyah McQueen, Ashtyn Meyers and Cameron Burnett are currently ranked in the top 50 in different statistical categories.

A freshman on one of the top teams in the 13th Region, McQueen has helped guide her Lady Cats to a 18-4 record while putting up impressive stats. She is currently ranked 27th in the state in rebounds and 49th in the state in field-goal percentage. She is averaging 10.4 rebounds per game and is shooting the ball at a 52.8 percent clip.

In the team’s last outing against Knox Central, McQueen hauled in nine rebounds. She has averaged 7.6 rebounds over the last five games.

Also another young member of the Lady Cats, Meyers is currently ranked 44th in the state in 3-pointers per game. She currently averages 2.2 baskets from beyond the arc.

As a team, the Bell County girls basketball team ranks 27th in team scoring (60.8 per game), 41st in team margin of victory (11.8) and 44th in rebounds (33.2).

The Pineville Lady Lions have also been impressive this season. They are currently ranked 50th in defense (45.2 points allowed per game), 47th in margin of victory (10.8) and 16th in team field-goal percent (44 percent).

On the boys side, Burnett is ranked 45th in the state in free-throw percentage. When the stats were recorded on Feb.10, Burnett was connecting on 79.7 percent of his free throws. Since then that number has improved to 80.4 percent. In the team’s last game against Clay County, the sophomore went 9-for-10 from the charity stripe.

The Middlesboro boys basketball team also found themselves in the top 25 in the state in a statistical category. The Yellow Jackets are ranked 23rd in the state in defense. The team is allowing 52.5 points per game. They have given up over 52 points 11 times this season.
