Union’s women basketball charges over Buffaloes

BARBOURVILLE — Brooke Hammonds led Union College women’s basketball to a 72-53 win over Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent Milligan College (Tenn.) on Tuesday night, as the junior collects her sixth double-double and earned a season-high 22 points while tying her career-high in points.
With the win, the Bulldogs move to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference, while the Buffaloes fall to 2-8 on the season and 1-5 in the AAC.
TURNING POINT
Union led the entirety of the contest, only allowing Milligan to come within a point early during the first quarter. The Bulldogs continued to execute during the first half earning a 20-point lead making it 39-19 to go into halftime.
The third quarter started with Union’s largest lead of the night as Chariss Wilson hit a shot beyond the arc to increase the Bulldogs lead to 42-19. Until the end Union continued to put pressure on Milligan and ended the game with a 20-point lead to make it 72-53.
QUOTABLE
“This was a good all-around team win tonight,” said Hammonds. “We have been working hard on our defense for the past week and I think it has shown in our last two games. I’m so proud of my teammates and all the work we have put in every practice.”
BULLDOG NOTES
Hammonds led the way with 22-points and 10 boards.
Three other Bulldogs finished with double digits as LeAsia Linton collected 15 points, followed by Chariss Wilson with 14 points, and Logan Calvert with 12.
Defensively, Katrina Johnson was close behind Hammonds just a board shy of double digits earning nine rebounds.
Skyler Burd was a vital defensive asset posting up for a career-high of eight boards.
NEXT FOR THE BULLDOGS
Union will take a trip to Kingsport, Tenn. Where they will compete in the NAIA “The Show” Showcase on Nov. 30- Dec. 1. They will face the University of Rio Grande (Ohio) on Saturday and Robert Morris University (Ill.) on Sunday. Tipoff for Saturday is set for 2: 30 p.m.
