Working together to fight hunger in Bell County is one way the Bell County/Pineville Retired Teachers Association is making a difference in their hometown. The BC/PRTA launched its local effort supporting the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association and AARP Kentucky, both working together to alleviate hunger locally.

This effort is one part of the larger national “Drive to End Hunger Campaign” with Jeff Gordon, AARP and the AARP Foundation to solve the problem of senior hunger in America.

Hunger threatens 13.4% of Kentuckians with 5.4% of seniors being at risk. Overall, the state ranks 20th nationally for at-risk seniors. KRTA locals across the state are taking on the challenge of helping change this with the “Yes, We Can Feed Kentucky” food collections in 2019.

The BC/PRTA collected 92 canned food item donations in October from their membership to be used for the RISE Center Thanksgiving Meal located at the former First Presbyterian Church of Pineville.

“This is our community, we care and we are doing something about it. We are inviting and hoping other local groups will join with us and help end hunger right here in Pineville and Bell County,” says BC/PRTA President Jes’Anne Givens. “We knew there was a need in Pineville, and we know everyone can make a difference. We appreciate the response from our membership, and it is a testament to the commitment of our volunteers and the willingness of this community to get involved.”
