The Middlesboro Lady Jackets’ basketball team held a fundraiser at Pelancho’s Mexican Grill on Tuesday night in Middlesboro to help raise money for the girls basketball program. Each year, the Jackets and Lady Jackets engage with the community in an attempt to raise money for their sports programs. In a partnership agreement with Pelancho’s, the Lady Jackets received a portion of all sales between 5 and 9 p.m.

“Pelancho’s does a great job out here,” said Middlesboro coach Scott Overbay. “I can’t say enough about them and what they do for our sports teams. A lot of the sports teams from Middlesboro have held fundraisers here as well, and Pelancho’s always does a great job in helping us out.”

With the basketball season right around the corner, Overbay feels like his team may be able to surprise some people this season just like they did last year.

“We are anxiously awaiting the start of the season,” said Overbay. “We are about a week or so away from being able to get started because they’ve got our gym torn down right now redoing the whole floor. We are just patiently waiting. We are excited to get back in and get going. We are going to have some new faces this year after having graduated our seniors last year and a new group coming up.

“Marta Seguara, our exchange student, will also be gone because she went back to Spain. We had a few others transfer out also. But, we are still going to be the same hard working team that we always have been. We are going to get up and down the floor and do the best we can. Hopefully, we can surprise some people like we did last year. We did a lot of things last year that people didn’t expect. That’s what I told the team, we can always do something that they don’t expect us to do.”
