An Evarts Elementary School teacher was arrested Tuesday after allegedly being found in the school parking lot while intoxicated.

Matthew Hubbard, 49, of Evarts, was arrested by Harlan County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Cope and charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place (first and second offense). He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.

According to the citation, Hubbard was allegedly found in the Evarts Elementary School parking lot. Cope said Hubbard smelled of alcohol and his speech was slurred.

Cope said Hubbard also refused all field sobriety tests.

Hubbard’s employment has been suspended without pay by the Harlan County School District. The school board will determine whether or not his employment should be terminated during the next scheduled board meeting on Oct. 17.

Harlan County Superintendent Brent Roark said Hubbard has only been employed for approximately two months as a special education teacher.

Hubbard was also previously fired from a Claiborne County School system in Tennessee.

He is scheduled to appear in Harlan District Court on Oct. 21 at 10 a.m.

Officers from the Evarts Police Department also assisted with the arrest.
