Middlesboro defeats Barbourville, 3-1

For the first time since Aug. 27, the Middlesboro volleyball team was victorious in a 3-1 win over Barbourville on Thursday. The victory put an end to a 12-game losing streak that started following a 3-0 loss to Knox Central.

The Lady Jackets cruised in their opening two sets winning both 25-13. Middlesboro slipped up in the third period falling 25-22 before grinding out a 25-21 victory in the fourth set.

Amber Mullins and Shelby Herrell paced the team. Mullins finished the game with seven service aces, four digs, two assists and three blocks. Herrell tallied six service aces, two digs, five assists and three blocks. Chloe Burchette ended the night with six service aces, five digs, four assists and two blocks.

Middlesboro (2-13) returns to action on Oct. 14 against Harlan County (2-12).

Pineville suffers second straight loss in 3-0 defeat to Red Bird

The Lady Lions couldn’t get their offense going on Thursday as they fell to Red Bird in straight sets (25-15, 25-17, 25-13). It was their second consecutive loss following a defeat to Knox Central on Tuesday.

Chesney Brock and Hannah Robbins paced Pineville’s efforts during the match. Brock finished with five kills and two service aces. Robbins ended the night with three kills, two blocks and one assist. Reece Foley tallied one kill, four assists and three service aces. Adelaida had one kill, four assists, one dig and one service ace.

Pineville (5-16) battles Williamsburg (11-13) on Oct. 14.

Bell County falls to Williamsburg in 5 sets

The Lady Cats own one of the best records in the 13th Region behind only Knox Central, Oneida Baptist Institute and Corbin. That wasn’t enough on Thursday as Bell County lost 3-2 in a back-and-forth war with Williamsburg.

After narrowly falling in the first set (25-22), the Lady Cats rebounded with a 25-21 win in the second set. The Lady Jackets were able to rally back with a 25-21 win in the third set before Bell posted a close 25-23 victory in the fourth set. Williamsburg claimed a 15-9 win to secure the win in the final frame.

The Lady Cats (11-8) return to action on Tuesday when they host Clay County (5-13).
