Lone Jack celebrates 78 years of reading with Curious George

Lone Jack School Center’s preschool- through third-grades hosted Curiosity Day recently in honor of Curious George’s 78th birthday. H.A. and Margaret Rey published their first Curious George book in 1941.
Curiosity Day kicked off with Early Bird Readers hosted by Lone Jack’s Family Resource Youth Service Center Coordinator Sheila Fuson and Librarian and Literacy Facilitator Melanie Mills. There was a host of parents and students, who arrived early before school started to read Curious George books together.
The Family Resource Youth Service Center donated door prizes for this event. Winners announced were: Clark Smith (kindergarten) and mother Carrie Smith, and Connor Stewart (first grade) and mother Sydney Stewart.
Principal Defevers kick-started the school day celebration by reading Curious George Makes Pancakes as the students enjoyed a pancake and banana breakfast (two of Curious George’s favorite foods) served by the cafeteria staff.
Students and parents made Curiosity Boxes to represent things they were curious about or things that would make others curious. These were on display in the Library Media Center. Prizes were awarded to first place winner (unnamed), second place winner, Zeke Trosper (third grade) and third place winner, Sarah Gibbons (kindergarten). All students who participated were awarded with a Curious George book to take home. The prizes were provided by Lone Jack’s PTS.
The library was decorated with a Curious George theme with Curious George books on display.
Pineville-Bell County Public Librarian Erica Overbay visited the library to read Curious George books with each class, kindergarten- through third-grades. She read Curious George Goes to a Costume Party. Mrs. Erica also worked with the students to make Curious George paper bag puppets.
The students enjoyed hearing her tell the stories and getting to take their puppets home. “It’s always a great pleasure to have Mrs. Erica visit our school,” comments Mills.
For snack time (recess), students enjoyed Curious George cupcakes, decorated in Curious George colors by Long’s Pic Pac Bakery. Students sang, Happy Birthday to Curious George during this special time. In preparation of this event, the school’s library purchased a new collection of Curious George books, which the students are now excited to check out.
