Union loses ‘Battle for the Brass Lantern’

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) found the end zone twice within the first three minutes of the game and never looked back as Union College fell 98-0 on Saturday.
The No. 13 Patriots (3-0 overall) keep the Brass Lantern for the third year in a row.
Union falls to 0-5 on the year.
TURNING POINT
Cumberlands scored twice and was up 14-0 with 12:22 remaining in the first quarter. An interception set up the Patriots’ first score, a Martize Smith 2-yard run. Cumberlands then caught Union off guard with an onside kick, recovering the ball on its own 47. On the next play, the Patriots scored on a 53-yard pass play.
Cumberlands took a 42-0 lead into the half and continued to add to its lead the rest of the night.
ONE BRIGHT SPOT
Tramonte Gardner picked off two passes for the Bulldogs. This is the first time a Bulldog has multiple interceptions in a game since Seth Nichols had two against Faulkner University (Fla.) on Sept. 15, 2018.
NEXT FOR THE BULLDOGS
Union opens Mid-South Conference (MSC) Appalachian Division play on Saturday when it visits Bluefield College (Va.). Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
