WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A slow start offensively put the Union College football behind the 8-ball as it fell 42-18 to host Webber International University (Fla.) on Saturday.

The loss drops Union to 0-2 overall, while Webber improves to 1-1.

STAGNANT FIRST HALF

The Bulldogs struggled to move the ball effectively in the first half, collecting only 82 yards during the first 30 minutes. Meanwhile, the Warriors found the end zone three times in building a 21-0 halftime lead. Webber scored on a 7-yard pass, a 3-yard run, and a 37-yard pass.

SECOND-HALF SCORING

Union opened the second half with a touchdown as Kendrick Furness hit Ke’Yondre Bledsoe for a 25-yard scoring strike, pulling the Bulldogs within 21-7 with 10:19 to go in the third. Webber answered with a quick touchdown, and Seth Burke booted a 25-yard field goal to make it 28-10 at the end of three quarters.

The Warriors, though, found the end zone twice within the first five minutes of the fourth to open up a 42-10 cushion.

Earl Wells hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass from Connor Marchionda with 1:09 to play. The 2-point conversion made the final 42-18.

SOLID GROUND ATTACK

After a slow start, Union piled up 175 rushing yards on 35 carries. Jalen Echols led the way with 60 yards.

BULLDOG NOTES

Union outgained Webber 340-312 in total offense.

Furness and Marchionda combined to pass for 165 yards.

Both teams were flagged for nine penalties each.

Wells led the receiving corps with five receptions for 66 yards. For the season, he has nine catches for 209 yards and two scores.

Jay Brown led the defense with eight tackles.

Union opens the home portion of its schedule on Saturday when it hosts St. Thomas University (Fla.). Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
