BECKLEY, W.Va. — A hard-fought battle that ended in a disappointing loss for the Union College men’s soccer team as they took West Virginia Tech University to overtime but fell 1-0 on Saturday.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Bears start their 2019 campaign 1-0.

TURNING POINT

It was a neck-and-neck battle as West Virginia Tech only outshot the Bulldogs by one 14-13, but it was Union who had more shots on goal with eight to the Bears’ six.

At the end of a draining 90-minute fight, the Bulldogs sent the game into overtime, but it was the Bears who attacked first finding the netting at the 93:49 minute to close out the contest with a goal from Manuel Garcia.

QUOTABLE

“Today was very unfortunate for us,” said head coach Jonathan Shaw. “Unfortunately, that is soccer for you though. They got their chance and took it very well. I’m proud of the performance today as last year when we played them they dominated us where this year we controlled the game and should have won. It’s still early in the season and this performance shows we are at the level we need to be to compete and we will keep learning and improving over the next few weeks to be ready for conference play.”

BULLDOG NOTES

Midfielders Matteo Lambertoni and Duarte Rebelo each earned two shots on goal.

Defender Christopher Samuels shot three, all being on goal.

Keeper Filipe Barateiro went the entire 93:52 minutes collecting three saves.
