The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has set aside June as Adopt-a-Shelter Cat Month. To celebrate the occasion, Friends of the Bell County Animal Shelter (FOS) will pay half the usual adoption fee of $70 for any cat or kitten adopted through July 15. That means you can adopt your next best friend for only $35. That price also includes the spay or neutering service, one set of shots and a deworming.

Glam-A-Ganza, a benefit fundraiser for Bell County Relay For Life, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 29 at the Middlesboro National Guard Armory with essential oil products, bath & body products, make-up, purses, wallets, jewelry, air fresheners, candles, vinyl products and small home decor.

Motorcycles on Main, a bike show and benefit for 3-year-old Gunnar Simpson (who has Trisomy 18 or “Edwards Syndrome”) will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. on June 29 on Main Street in Pineville. All riders and motorcycle clubs are welcome. There will also be inflatables, food, music, crafts and vendors. The cost is $20 for a spot in the show. Stand in the Gap Coalition will host Support Transition and Recovery Training (START) on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 325 Straight Creek Road in New Tazewell (old Powell Valley Electric office). A Hometown Celebration will be held on the Courthouse Square in downtown Pineville on July 3. The schedule includes: 6 p.m., Golf Cart Parade ($100 prize) and vendors open on the square; 7 p.m., The Sandlot at the Bell Theater; 9 p.m., street dance; and 10 p.m., fireworks. On July 4 there will be an All-Day Pool Party at Pineville City Pool featuring free admission, pool competitions with prizes, hot dogs, music and the Lil’ Miss Firecracker competition. The first 100 people will receive a free water bottle.

JULY 4

The city of Middlesboro will host a fireworks celebration beginning at dusk on July 4 along U.S. 25E. In case of inclement weather, the fireworks will be held on July 6 in conjunction with the inaugural veterans event, Vietnam Welcome Home in downtown Middlesboro.

JULY 6

The Bell County Chamber of Commerce and Tri-State Veterans will host a “Vietnam Welcome Home” celebration from 4 to 8 p.m. on July 6 in downtown Middlesboro to honor those who have served in the Vietnam War and ll wars of our country. The celebration will include a parade, vendors and entertainment. Vendors will be set up on the city parking lot from 2 to 8 p.m. The parade will take place at 4 p.m. starting on 15th Street and ending on 20th Street. Following the parade, the celebration continues in the city parking lot with posting of the colors and singing of the national anthem and entertainment.

JULY 9

The Cumberland Valley Chapter of the Kentucky Public Retirees (KPR) will meet on July 9 at David’s Steak House in Corbin. Mealtime will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the meeting to follow. The guest speaker will be Larry Totten, statewide president of Kentucky Public Retirees. Retirees (and spouses) receiving retirement benefits from KERS, CERS or SPRS are welcome to attend. Those who are mourning the death of a loved one are invited to attend the Griefshare at New Beginning Baptist Church in Harrogate. This non-denominational Christ-centered program features biblical teachings by grief experts and testimonies of grieving people. Appalachian Promise of Claiborne (APCC), a 501(C)3 faith-based organization, provides free IOP classes for those battling addiction with drug testing every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon at N. 1718 Broad Street in Tazewell. All services are free to the Tri-State area and assistance with rehab placement is also available. Parenting and anger management classes along with job placement is provided as well. Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO), a 501(c)3 nonprofit, faith-based organization, along with local churches in the Tri-State area is hosting an evening out for grandparents and caregivers by providing childcare on the second Tuesday of each month. Volunteers are needed for the Kentucky Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (Cumberland Valley District) to read a while, play a game of checkers, discuss the day’s events, reminisce or just sit and watch TV with a local senior. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Bell, Harlan, Knox and Whitley counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
