The Center for Rural Development is offering funding assistance for Certified Fiber Optic (CFO) training courses to unemployed and under-employed individuals who live in select counties. The CFO courses are designed for anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optic Technician.

The following courses are being offered by SCC Workforce Solutions in partnership with The Center for Rural Development and Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC):

• CFO Technician: July 15-17

• CFO Specialist/Splicing: July 18-19

• CFO Specialist/Outside Plant: July 22-23

Fiber Optic Training combines theory and 85 percent hands-on activities to prepare the student to take the CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) test that is sanctioned by the FOA (Fiber Optics Association).

Unemployed or under-employed individuals living in Bell, Clay, Floyd, Harlan, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Laurel, Leslie, Letcher, McCreary, Perry, Pulaski, or Whitley counties are eligible to apply for funding. If approved, The Center for Rural Development will fund up to 80 percent of the participant’s training cost in partnership with ARC. Students are able to register for multiple certifications, provided that they have not previously taken them.

Classes will be held at the Somerset Community College Lineman Training Center in the Valley Oak Industrial Park at 347 Coin Road in Somerset.
