Pejic, Campos earn NAIA men’s tennis All-American honors

BARBOURVILLE — The Union College men’s tennis team placed two on the 2019 NAIA All-American Team, marking the second time in program history the Bulldogs had multiple honorees.

Srdan Pejic earned second-team honors, while Simon Campos received an honorable mention. Union placed two on the second team in 2011 when Nicholas Ernst and Yvon Haessig were recognized.

Both were named to the All-Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) First Team. The duo played together at No. 1 doubles for the Bulldogs, posting a 6-4 mark as a squad and being ranked as high as No. 14 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as a doubles tandem.

Pejic finished the season ranked 45th in singles play by the ITA, going 10-9 overall. Pejic closed out the season strong by winning his final four singles matches, including a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Point University’s Federico Barbon, who is ranked No. 19 by the ITA.

Playing primarily at No. 2 or No. 3 singles, Campos posted a 12-5 singles mark and ended the year ranked 50th by the ITA. Campos posted a 4-1 mark in his final five matches of 2019, including a 6-2, 6-2 win over Luiz Gustavo Hartkopf of Asbury University in the NAIA National Championship Tournament.

Union finished the season 13-9 overall and 4-3 in the AAC, finishing fourth in the regular-season. The Bulldogs advanced to the AAC Tournament championship match and qualified for the NAIA National Championship Tournament as the No. 10 seed. Union ended the season ranked 10th in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.
