The Middlesboro Daily News will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to beth.key@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1275 North 25th Street, Middlesboro. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. MAY 25

KMLF Kid’s Got Talent Contest will be held May 25, from 1 to 3 p.m. Two age groups: 7- to 10-year-olds and 11- to 14-year-olds. Those entering must fill out an application by May 1 — no exceptions. Judging on stage presentation, knowledge of the talent and crowd response. If you are singing, it must be to an instrument, instrumental track or acapella (no lip-syncing). MAY 28-31

The Middlesboro boys basketball camp will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon beginning on May 28 at the Middlesboro High School gymnasium. The cost of the camp is $40 and is for boys ages 6 to 15.

MAY 29

The Bell County Board of Education will be participating in the Summer Feeding Program June 3 through July 19. This program is designed to feed any child 18 and under. If your non-profit organization would like to participate in the program, plan to attend a mandatory training at 10:30 a.m. on May 29 at the Bell County Board of Education Administration Office. MAY 30

The Bell County Historical Society’s annual board meeting will begin at 4 p.m. on May 30 at the Bell County Historical Society Museum, located at 207 North 20th Street in Middlesboro. Everyone is invited to attend.

The Bell County Extension Service in partnership with the Pineville Library will offer “Stories, Songs and Stretches” sessions at the Pineville Library starting May 30 at 10:30 a.m. Participants will create playful story times with yoga and movement. JUNE 1

An End of School Bash will begin at 10 a.m. on June 1 in the downtown Middlesboro parking lot with a summer party with inflatables, food, DJ John Day. Fun and games.

The Cumberland Gap Artists Co-op, a non-profit organization, will present an Art Extravaganza Festival in Cumberland Gap, on June 1 featuring arts and crafts of Appalachian artist from the Tri-State region. Musical entertainment will be The Three Dog Celebration Band and the talent Acree Brother, of Louisville.

The 20th annual L&N Day will be held June 1 in the heart of the Old Town Artists’ Village, North Broadway, Berea. This event is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 800-598-5263 or visit www.visitberea.com.

The Knox Street Thunder Car Show will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 1 at Pine Mountain State Resort Park.

First Christian Church, located at 2130 West Cumberland Avenue, will host a “Mom’s Mingle” Meet and Greet (moms supporting moms) at 2 p.m. on June 2. Refreshments will be served. For transportation, call 606-248-2517.

The Miss Harlan County Scholarship/Miss Poke Sallet Pageant will begin at 6 p.m. on June 4 at the Harlan Elementary School auditorium.

JUNE 7-8

Bell County’s first Laurel Music Festival will take place June 7 and 8 at the Laurel Cove Amphitheater, organized through a partnership with Main Street Pineville, Pine Mountain State Resort Park and Bell County Tourism. Lineup and ticket information will be announced at a later date.

JUNE 8

Pudge’s Summer Music Festival will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on June 8. Plate lunches will be sold and include ribeye, hamburgers and hot dogs, baked bean and Cole slaw. Live performances include: Open mic, noon; New River Rising Bluegrass Band, of Campbell County area, 1 p.m.; Lauren and the Howler, local alternative rock band, 2 p.m.; and featured group Willie Wells and Blue Ridge Grass of South Carolina. 3 p.m. A silent auction will end at 3:30 p.m. All proceeds go to the Powell Valley Masonic Lodge’s scholarship fund and other Masonic charities.

Indian Creek Baptist Church’s regular monthly singing will begin at 6 p.m. on June 9 featuring The Botts Family, of Lafollette, and others. Pastor Steve Moyers welcomes everyone.

JUNE 9-14

Riverside Baptist Church in Harrogate will host Vacation Bible School June 10-14. Kick off will begin at 4 p.m. on June 9 with a cookout. Classes for adults and children of all ages — everyone is welcome. The director is Charles Yeary and adult teacher is Bob Nunn.

New Hope Missionary Baptist Church will host Vacation Bible School from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 9-14. Kickoff and registration will begin at 6 p.m. on June 9. A light meal is available for kids 18 and under at 5:45 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call 423-526-1910.

New Beginning Baptist Church, located at 2305 Hwy. 63 in Harrogate, will be in revival beginning at 7 p.m. nightly June 10-14. Evangelist Gordon Dykes will be preaching. Everyone is welcome to attend.

JUNE 13

The League of Women Voters will sponsor a town hall meeting on the drug problem at 7 p.m. on June 13 at the First Christian Church in Middlesboro. This meeting will center on faith-based organizations and how they can and are addressing the drug problem and its many ramifications in our community. The audience will be encouraged to ask questions and offer comments and suggestions.

JUNE 22

The first Cruisin’ the Chained Rock car show will begin at 5 p.m. on June 22 on Main Street in Pineville featuring food vendors, giveaways and trophies. There is a $5 entry fee.

JULY 17-OCT. 9

Those who are mourning the death of a loved one are invited to attend the Griefshare at New Beginning Baptist Church in Harrogate. This non-denominational Christ-centered program features biblical teachings by grief experts and testimonies of grieving people. GriefShare offers insights that help to renew hope for the future as well as providing the chance to be around other that understand. New Beginning Christian Academy (NBCA), located at 2305 Hwy. 63 in Cumberland Gap, is currently accepting applications for K3- through eighth-grade for the 2019-2020 school year. The A Beka curriculum is offered with a small Christian learning environment, less distractions and more emphasis on your child. Appalachian Promise of Claiborne (APCC), a 501(C)3 faith-based organization, provides free IOP classes for those battling addiction with drug testing every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon at N. 1718 Broad Street in Tazewell. All services are free to the Tri-State area and assistance with rehab placement is also available. Parenting and anger management classes along with job placement is provided as well. Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO), a 501(c)3 nonprofit, faith-based organization, along with local churches in the Tri-State area is hosting an evening out for grandparents and caregivers by providing childcare on the second Tuesday of each month. SIGCO is located at 325 Straight Creek Road, New Tazewell, Tennessee. A service of SIGCO is to provide free saliva-based drug testing kits with instructions, called Give Me a Reason. GED classes are being offered to anyone 19 years or older. Improve your reading, writing and mathematical skills and study to receive your GED. Volunteers are needed for the Kentucky Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (Cumberland Valley District) to read a while, play a game of checkers, discuss the day’s events, reminisce or just sit and watch TV with a local senior. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. Kits can be obtained at 44 different distribution points throughout the Tri-State area and at the SIGCO office, at 325 Straight Creek Road, New Tazewell, Tennessee. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area, which includes Bell, Harlan, Knox and Whitley counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning. A military support group for all active, separated or any former military men or women meets at 6:30 p.m. each first and third Monday of the month at the Middlesboro National Guard Armory, located on 30th Street.
