Bulldogs’ tournament run ends in championship game

KINGSPORT, Tenn. — The Union College baseball team fell short in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament championship game as top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan captured a 10-2 final on Monday.

With the loss, Union moves to 27-23 overall, while Tennessee Wesleyan increases their record to 48-8 on the season.

Union’s offense couldn’t seem to find their drive from earlier in the AAC tournament, as a runner didn’t come across the plate until the bottom the sixth. Union’s two runs came off an error scoring Nick Shumaker after starting the inning off with a double to deep left-center field. The final run for the Bulldogs came off an RBI single from Dallas Green to close the gap to 9-2.

Tennessee Wesleyan added a run in the top of the seventh off a solo home run to make it 10-2. In the bottom of the ninth, Union loaded up the bases with just one out and looked to make a run, but Tennessee Wesleyan closed out the tournament defeating Union 10-2.

BULLDOG NOTES

Shumaker led the Bulldogs going 3-for-5, with one run scored and a double.

On the mound, Grant Lohmeier pitched four innings, allowing just one run while striking out six.

Chris Guiles was the only other Bulldog to have more than one hit going 2-for-4.

Joe Gaines, Daniel Neal, Sinjin Shoop, and Ty Holmstrom were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

Union will wait for the NAIA opening round brackets to be announced on Thursday at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs anxiously wait for the reveal of where they will travel for the first round.
