The Middlesboro Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets track and field teams had a very successful meet on Saturday, winning three team events on the men’s side and two events on the women’s side. The men placed first in the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 meter runs, and the women placed first in the 4×400 and 4×800 meter runs.

It was a very strong day for the men in the individual competition as Alex Mason took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.73, followed by Scotty Overbay in fifth place with a time of 12.12 seconds. Mason took first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.47 seconds, followed by Jabari Kyle in fourth place with a time of 25.37.

Steven Poore took first place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.20 seconds, edging out Madison Southern’s Jordan Williams by almost a full second. He was followed closely by T.J. Patterson in third place with a time of 58.20.

Junior Arrieta took second place in the 800-meter event, with a time of 2:20.27. Ozzy Norris grabbed a third-place finish in the 1600-meter run and a fourth-place finish in the 3200-meter run with times of 5:29.94 and 12:34.53.

Kyle took first place in the long jump, with a distance of 20 feet. He was followed closely by Poore with an 18-foot leap.

Along with individual success, the Yellow Jackets took first place in the 4×100 meter relay, with a time of 45.57. Middlesboro also took first place in the 4×200 meter relay and the 4×400 meter relay with times of 1:37.35 and 3:58.23, respectively.

The Yellow Jackets grabbed second place in the 4×800 meter event, with Harlan County edging Middlesboro by less than two seconds.

Lady Jacket Kayla James took sixth in the women’s 100-meter dash with a time of 14.36 seconds. Amber Mullins was the next Lady Jacket to cross the line, finishing in the middle of the pack at 14th with a time of 15.55.

James also took fourth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 30.14. Brooklyn Grigsby and Kennadi Larew gave the Lady Jackets solid times in the 400-meter dash, finishing third and fifth respectively. Grigsby notched a time of 1:11.35 and Larew ended with a time of 1:12.73.

Grace Rose dominated the 800-meter dash, outpacing Harlan County’s Morgan Blakely by over five full seconds — 2:43.38 to 2:48.94.

Mallory James and Emory Glover dominated the 1600-meter and 3200-meter events, finishing first and third respectively in the 1600 with times of 6:15.54 and 6:32.47. They finished first and second respectively in the 3200 with times of 14:00.16 and 14:25.91.

Lady Jacket basketball standout Baylee Woody took first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.14 seconds. Woody also finished third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.02.

Along with performing well individually, the Lady Jackets won the 4×400 meter event with a time of 4:49.01 and the 4×800 meter event with a time of 11:34.28.
