Big Stone Gap Officer and woman found shot inside vehicle

Virginia State Police officials are continuing the investigation into the discovery of two people found dead inside a vehicle with gunshot wounds Sunday morning in Lee County.

Officers were dispatched to the scene of an accident when the man and woman were found dead inside of the car around 4 a.m. just outside Big Stone Gap along Route 23.

In a press release from VSP, it was confirmed that the male identified as Bailey Smith is a police officer with Big Stone Gap Police Department and had been an officer with them since January 2018.

Both bodies were taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for autopsy and further examination.
