Bell County freshman girls win regional tournament

The Bell County girls won three straight games en route to winning the 13th Region freshman tournament on Saturday in Bell County. The Lady Bobcats averaged 45 points per game, while giving up an average of 29 points per game. Playing all three games in one day, Bell County defeated Corbin in the first round, South Laurel in the second round and Whitley County in the championship game.

“The girls played very hard and very well,” said Bell County head coach David Teague. “They have had a great freshman season; they’ve done a great job in practice all year. I was very excited that all of their hard work paid off by winning the regional championship. We have a good young group that just enjoys playing the game.”

Led by Ashtyn Meyers with 16 and Talyah McQueen with 12, the Lady Bobcats took out Corbin, 53-24, in the first round. The Bobcat defense limited Corbin to only 24 total point, while Bell County had 28 points in the first half.

Nadine Johnson added 8 for Bell County, Makenzie Napier had 7, Mikayla Gambrel, 4, Kamdyn Hoskins, 3, Gracie Calloway, 2, and Abby Jackson, 1.

Led by Talyah McQueen with 12 points and 13 rebounds, the Lady Bobcats out-raced South Laurel 38-37, in the semi-finals to advance to the championship game. Neither team’s offense found a lot of success during their match-up, but Bell County held on for a victory.

Ashtyn Meyers had 11 points for Bell County, while Makenzie Napier added 8, Nadine Johnson had 3, and Abby Jackson and Grace Wilder scored 2 each.

Led by Ashtyn Meyers with 13, Nadine Johnson with 12 and Talyah McQueen with 11, the Lady Bobcats won the championship over Whitley County 44-27. Makenzie Napier added 7, and Abby Jackson had 1 to round out the scoring.The Lady Bobcats controlled the entire game. With 31 points in the first half, Bell County could have stopped there and still won. The Lady Bobcats throttled back their offense while maintaining their strong defense to finish the game out, and claim their championship.
