Hammonds, Calvert combine for 40 points in AAC victory

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Brooke Hammonds collected her sixth double-double for Union College in a 66-53 Appalachian Athletic Conference win over host Columbia College on Saturday.

With the win, the Bulldogs move to 12-7 overall and 9-6 in conference play, while the Koalas fall to 6-12 on the year and 5-10 in the AAC.

After the first three minutes in the first quarter, Union took control and never allowed Columbia to take the lead. The Bulldogs’ largest lead came in the third quarter after Jordan Sandefur hit a 3-pointer to make it a 52-31 game.

The Koalas tried to close the margin, but Union only allowed Columbia to come within nine points in the final four minutes of regulation.

BULLDOG NOTES

Hammonds and Logan Calvert each tallied 20 points in the win, as Hammonds collected 11 rebounds and Calvert earned eight boards.

Hammonds also led the team in assists with five, while Cheyanne Stidham dished out four and LeAsia Linton tallied three.

Union dominated the glass, outrebounding Columbia 46-33.

Hammonds shot the ball well on the night, hitting 8-of-14 shots from the floor and going 3-for-5 from behind the arc.

QUOTABLE

“We went on the road and played in a tough environment,” said Hammonds. “We struggled in the first half and let them hang around, but we got it together and came out with a big win on the road.”

NEXT UP FOR THE BULLDOGS

Union returned to Columbia, South Carolina on Monday in a makeup game against Columbia International University in AAC play. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
