COLUMBIA, S.C. — No. 9 Union College had arguably its best offensive night of the season, and the Bulldogs needed it as they pulled out a wild 113-107, double-overtime victory over the host Yellow Jackets of Allen University on Saturday.

The win improves Union to 14-4 overall and 9-2 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play, while Allen drops to 6-11 overall and 3-8 in the league.

Union connected on 60 percent of its shots from the field, sinking 39-of-65 in equaling its top shooting performance of the year. The Bulldogs proved to be lethal at the charity stripe as well in going 30-for-35 (85.7 percent). The free-throwing shooting was a bit uncharacteristic for Union as it entered the game making 60.8 percent from the foul line.

Allen didn’t slack on offense either, hitting 40-of-69 shots (58.0 percent) on the night. Yet, the Yellow Jackets struggled at the line, going 22-of-36 (61.1 percent).

FINISHING STRONG

After 40 minutes of regulation and one overtime period, the score remained tied at 97-all. Union took charge in the second overtime. A Jakobe Wharton 3-pointer quickly gave the Bulldogs the lead and fueled a 6-0 spurt for a 103-97 advantage. Cameron Sembly hit four consecutive free throws to pull Allen within two, but Union responded with another 6-0 run to open up a 109-101 lead with 39 seconds to play.

The Yellow Jackets ran out of answers with DeMarkus Loman and Jabari Antwine both hit a pair of free throws done the stretch to secure the 113-107 Bulldog victory.

BULLDOG OF THE GAME

Five Bulldogs scored in double figures, but Loman outshined everyone with his season-high 31 points. He connected on 12-of-18 shots and went 7-for-8 at the line. Loman also led Union on the glass with eight rebounds.

BULLDOG NOTES

Joining Loman in scoring in double digits are K.J. Duronslet (24 points), Derek Morgan (22 points), Derio Little (11 points), and Lance Blakley (10 points).

Morgan connected on 10-of-12 shots from the floor.

Union outrebounded Allen 37-31.

There were 15 lead changes and 14 ties. Neither team led by more than eight points.

While the teams shot well from the floor overall, both struggled from 3-point range. The Bulldogs went 5-for-18 (27.8 percent) from long range with the Yellow Jackets hitting a third (5-of-15) of their 3-point attempts.

Six Yellow Jackets scored in double figures with Demetrius Richardson’s 23 points leading the way.

Union remains on the road for yet another AAC contest, traveling to Truett McConnell University on Wednesday. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
