The Middlesboro Daily News will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to beth.key@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1275 North 25th Street, Middlesboro. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. NOV. 28

Bell-Whitley CAA, Inc. will hold a regional community meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 28 at Henderson Settlement. There will also be a meeting held the same day at 2 p.m. at the Bell-Whitley CAA Whitley County office. The purpose of these meetings will be to elect representatives for the Target Sector to serve on the Bell-Whitley CAA,Inc. Board of Directors

NOV. 29

The Middlesboro Board of Education will have a special board meeting at noon on Nov. 29 at the Middlesboro Board of Education, 220 North 20th Street, Middlesboro.

The LMU Women of Service Christmas Festival and Tree Lighting will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 29 held on the concourse of Tex Turner arena and will include lots of vendors, food and family fun. The Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra will be performing a concert in the arena at 7 p.m. Admission to the concert is free with the donation of a food, hygiene, children’s clothing or toy item for Mission of Hope. After the concert, the annual tree lighting will be held outside near the arena.

Local author Tony Myers is hosting a book launching party, for his third book “Divine Healing DIY,” from 5 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 29 at Sagebrush Steakhouse. All are welcome, and food will be provided.

NOV. 30

The Pineville Christmas Parade will begin at 7 p.m. on Nov. 30. Prizes will be awarded for best decorated entries in three categories.

DEC. 1

Breakfast with Santa will be held on Dec. 1 at the Middlesboro Public Library. Session one is from 9 to 10 a.m., and session two is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. This year’s theme is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Tickets are first come, first serve. Ages 0 to 10 years old for both sessions.

A Magic City Christmas will be held in Middlesboro on Dec. 1. The Christmas Parade begins at 1 p.m.; vendors, crafts, food trucks, ice sculptures and more will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Visit with Santa from 3 to 5 p.m. (time subject to change); tree lighting from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with special performance from Stella Parton; and Movies at the Levitt Lot at 6:30 p.m. (Frosty, Rudolph and Elf). The 36th annual Victorian Christmas in Cumberland Gap will be held Dec. 1 Father Christmas rides into town at 10 a.m., Then there will be over 200 treats given out to children in Festival Park on Colwyn Avenue.

DEC. 3

Cumberland Chapter No. 170 of the Order of the Eastern Star will hold their monthly meeting on Dec. 3 at the Masonic Lodge Hall, located at 5195 Dr. Thomas Walker Rd., 1 mile west of Rose Hill, Virginia. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting is at 7:30 p.m.

There will be a Middlesboro Trace District area-wide plan document review meeting at 3 p.m. on Dec. 4 at Middlesboro City Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Taylors Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Sharps Chapel, Tennessee will have a “Drive-through Living Nativity” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 7 and 8 — weather permitting. Pastor Brian Liford welcomes all to attend.

DEC. 9

Celebrate the Yuletide season as Pine Mountain Settlement School presents their annual Nativity Play at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Dec. 9 in the chapel. Doors open 30 minutes prior to each performance for special music.

Indian Creek Baptist Church’s regular monthly singing will begin at 6 p.m. on Dec. 9 featuring The Dyers and The Gospel Lights. Everyone is welcome.

DEC. 10

The Bell County 4-H Junior Homemaker Club will meet at 4 p.m. on Dec. 10 at the Bell County Extension Office. To register, call the office at 606-337-2376

DEC. 15

Santa is coming to the Harrogate Book Station from noon to 2 p.m. on Dec. 15 for age 3 to 12. There will be games, snacks and crafts.

DEC. 23

“Waiting for the Christmas Guest” Christmas play at Indian Creek Baptist Church will begin at 6 p.m. on Dec. 23. Food and refreshments will be served following the play and Santa will be arriving.

Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO), a 501(c)3 nonprofit, faith-based organization, along with local churches in the Tri-State area is hosting an evening out for grandparents and caregivers by providing childcare on the second Tuesday of each month. SIGCO is now located at 325 Straight Creek Road, New Tazewell, Tennessee. A service of SIGCO is to provide free saliva based drug testing kits with instructions, called Give Me a Reason (GMAR). GED classes are being offered to anyone 19 years or older. Improve your reading, writing and mathematical skills and study to receive your GED. Volunteers are needed for the Kentucky Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (Cumberland Valley District) to read a while, play a game of checkers, discuss the day’s events, reminisce or just sit and watch TV with a local senior. If you currently visit someone in a long term care facility or would like to become involved, contact Arlene Gibson at 606-864-7391 ext. 119.

Volunteers are sought at the Middlesboro Senior Citizens Center for activity assistants, answering the phone, welcoming seniors and visitors, filing, crafting, historians, entertainment, instructors in tai chi, other forms of senior exercise and a variety of educational topics for seniors. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason (GMAR) is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. Kits can be obtained at 44 different distribution points (DP) throughout the Tri-State area and at the SIGCO office, located at 502 Pennlyn Avenue in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning. Lighthouse Lifeline of Bell County non-residential support groups are held at the Lighthouse Mission Center, located at 3609 Hwy. 119 in Pineville. The “Something Different” Narcotics Anonymous group meets at 7 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays at the First Christian Church of Middlesboro, located at 2130 Cumberland Avenue. Meetings are open.

A military support group for all active, separated or any former military men or women meets at 6:30 p.m. each first and third Monday of the month at the Middlesboro National Guard Armory, located on 30th Street.
