The Bell County Historical Society is partnering with Discover Downtown Middlesboro and other area local businesses to present “Nightmare on 20th Street” from 5 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 27. The theme this year is “Halloween Carnival.” The event is free to the public — come in a costume. There will also be a haunted house, inflatable, T & T Stables, trunk-or-treat, games, food vendors and more.

The annual Middlesboro Mall-O-Ween will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 31.

Old Yellow Creek Baptist Church, 225 South 38th Street, Middlesboro, will host its ninth annual Trunk or Treat beginning at 5 p.m. on Oct.31 — only ages 12 and under in costume.

First Baptist Church of Cumberland Gap will host Trunk or Treat from 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 31. Everyone is invited to enjoy snacks and treats.

Indian Creek Baptist Church will host a Trunk or Treat from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 31.

In honor of Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, the Bell County Animal Shelter’s normal adoption fee of $70 will be half price for the entire month of October. You can adopt any puppy or adult dog for only $35. The Friends of the Bell County Animal Shelter (FOS) pays the other $35. That price includes spay or neuter, and a set of vaccinations.

The Middlesboro Schools’ Local Planning Committee will conduct a meeting at 6 p.m. on Nov. 1 at the Middlesboro Middle School in the Library, located at 4400 Cumberland Avenue. This is an committee orientation meeting and is one of a series to develop a District Facilities Plan for Middlesboro Independent Schools.The public is invited.

Cumberland Chapter No. 170 of the Order of the Eastern Star will have a turkey dinner from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 4 at Martin’s Station Masonic Lodge on Dr. Thomas Walker Road, one mile west of Rose Hill, Virginia. Menu will be turkey and all the trimmings, drinks and dessert. Cost is $9 for Adults, $6 for ages 5-12, under 5 is free. Carry out meals are $9. Proceeds will benefit the Scholarship Fund.

Pineville Chapter No. 89 Order of the Eastern Star will meet at 7 p.m. on Nov. 6 at the Masonic Building in Pineville. The meeting will be preceded with a meal at 6 p.m.

Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO), a 501(c)3 nonprofit, faith-based organization, along with local churches in the Tri-State area is hosting an evening out for grandparents and caregivers by providing childcare on the second Tuesday of each month. Volunteers are needed for the Kentucky Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (Cumberland Valley District) to read a while, play a game of checkers, discuss the day’s events, reminisce or just sit and watch TV with a local senior. Volunteers are sought at the Middlesboro Senior Citizens Center for activity assistants, answering the phone, welcoming seniors and visitors, filing, crafting, historians, entertainment, instructors in tai chi, other forms of senior exercise and a variety of educational topics for seniors. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason (GMAR) is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. Kits can be obtained at 44 different distribution points (DP) throughout the Tri-State area and at the SIGCO office, located at 502 Pennlyn Avenue in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
