State Democrats file complaint over governor’s tweet

FRAKNFORT, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky Democratic Party has filed an ethics complaint against Republican Gov. Matt Bevin for using his official Twitter account to support a GOP congressman’s re-election campaign.

Bevin’s official Twitter account posted a message on Saturday saying he was at the rally with a packed house of people who love President Donald Trump and are supporting U.S. Rep. Andy Barr on Nov. 6. The tweet has since been deleted. An identical tweet was posted to Bevin’s campaign Twitter account.

Tuesday, Democrats announced they filed a complaint with the Executive Branch Ethics Commission. Kentucky Democratic Party chairman Ben Self noted state law bans elected officials from using state time, resources and equipment for political campaign purposes.

Representatives from Bevin’s office did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment.

Barr raises $1.1M, trails Democratic rival

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Barr has raised more than $1.1 million in the past three months.

A report filed with the Federal Election Commission shows Barr has raised just over $4 million for his re-election campaign. He has $1.2 million available to spend in the final weeks of the campaign.

Barr faces a strong challenge from Democrat Amy McGrath, a retired Marine fighter pilot. McGrath’s campaign said she raised more than $3.6 million in the past three months, giving her $6.65 million since she launched her campaign last August. Her campaign said she has $1.7 million available to spend. Her report is not yet available on the election commission’s website.

Barr and McGrath had help this weekend. Former Vice President Joe Biden campaigned with McGrath in Owingsville while President Donald Trump campaigned for Barr in Richmond.

Jury: 4 guilty in shooting that killed Olympian’s daughter

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Four men have been found guilty in connection with the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Trinity Gay, the daughter of Olympian Tyson Gay.

News outlets report a jury returned the verdicts Monday after deliberating for nearly five hours.

Jurors pronounced Chazerae Taylor guilty of wanton murder and four counts of wanton endangerment. His son, D’Markeo Taylor, was found guilty of wanton endangerment. D’Vonta Middlebrooks was found guilty on one count of wanton endangerment, but not guilty on five other counts of the same charge. Lamonte Williams was found guilty on five counts of wanton endangerment.

Authorities have said Gay was an innocent bystander who died in 2016 after being shot in the neck during a shootout in a parking lot.

Panel to name finalists for postsecondary education leader

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education expects to announce finalists as it winds down its search for a new president.

A statement from the council says its presidential search committee will meet in closed session Tuesday at its Frankfort office to discuss personnel and afterward expects to announce finalists for the position in open session. The council coordinates Kentucky’s public college and universities. It launched a national search in July for a new leader after its president, Bob King, announced plans to retire.

King has served as president of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education since 2009.

Officials have said they hope to have a new person in place before the end of the year.

Ali Center to host screening of new Ali-related documentary

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Muhammad Ali Center will host a screening of a documentary that follows the life and times of the boxing great, as shown through his appearances on The Dick Cavett Show.

Ali Center officials say the documentary — “Ali & Cavett: The Tale of the Tapes” — will be shown Nov. 1 in the center’s auditorium in Louisville. The film will begin at 6 p.m.

The film features new interviews with Dick Cavett, the Rev. Al Sharpton and Larry Merchant, as well as archival material from the Cavett Show. Afterward, there will be a discussion with producer/director Robert Bader and a special appearance by Cavett.

Cavett was given his own daily talk show in 1968. The first show he taped featured Ali, who would appear on Cavett’s shows 14 times in the coming years.

Official: Tenn. woman, 4 kids killed in murder-suicide

COLUMBIA, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee official says a mother and four children have been found shot to death at a home in Columbia.

Maury County District Attorney Brent Cooper tells news outlets that the family died in an apparent murder-suicide. The dead children, who ranged in age from 8 to 16, and woman were found by a family member Monday evening. Maury County Sheriff Bucky Rowland said it was an “isolated” crime and while nobody else is suspected, they will do a full investigation.

Rowland says the children, three girls and one boy, were homeschooled, and there were no previous reports of violence at the home. Authorities haven’t released the identities of those involved.

Investigators were still at the scene early Tuesday.
