In honor of Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, the Bell County Animal Shelter’s normal adoption fee of $70 will be half price for the entire month of October. You can adopt any puppy or adult dog for only $35. The Friends of the Bell County Animal Shelter (FOS) pays the other $35. That price includes spay or neuter, and a set of vaccinations.

Friends of the Library Book Sale and Quilt Show will be held at the Middlesboro-Bell County Public Library on Oct.11, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Oct. 13,10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Oct. 15, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will also be VHS, DVD, audio books and other miscellaneous items for sale.

The League of Women Voters will sponsor a forum for candidates for state representative, Dustin Allen and Adam Bowling, at 7 p.m. on Oct. 11 at Middlesboro City Hall.

A meeting to discuss bringing the State Senior Games to Middlesboro will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Bell County Tourism Commission, 2215 W.Cumberland Avenue, Middlesboro. The meeting is open for anyone interested.

Martin’s Station Masonic Lodge No. 188, located at 5195 Dr. Thomas Walker Road west of Rose Hill, Virginia, will have a catfish & chicken dinner from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 12. Cumberland Gap Artists Co-op, a non-profit organization, is having its Annual Harvest Moon Gala from 2 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 13 on Colwyn Avenue in Cumberland Gap featuring art and crafts by Appalachian artists of the Tri-State area, lots of tasty food choices, wine tasting by East Tennessee wineries, great live music by Lee Warren, with rock country and gospel music and an old fashioned sock hop and cake walk. There will also be an art station for children to create art and display it, along with face painting.

Volunteers are needed for the Kentucky Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (Cumberland Valley District) to read a while, play a game of checkers, discuss the day’s events, reminisce or just sit and watch TV with a local senior. Volunteers are sought at the Middlesboro Senior Citizens Center for activity assistants, answering the phone, welcoming seniors and visitors, filing, crafting, historians, entertainment, instructors in tai chi, other forms of senior exercise and a variety of educational topics for seniors. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason (GMAR) is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
