The Middlesboro Daily News will publish local events in the community calendar free of charge as space allows. We do not accept submissions called in via phone. All submissions should be emailed to beth.key@harlandaily.com or dropped off at our office, 1275 North 25th Street, Middlesboro. Submissions should be received no later than four business days prior to the event. If received in time, it will be published one or two days prior to the event. The Upper Cumberland/KEA Retired Teachers will hold their annual fall meeting on Sept. 25 at David’s Steaks in Corbin. Lunch (provided) at 11:30 a.m. and meeting at noon. Business will be the election of officers (president, vice-president, secretary) for 2018-2020. Speaker will be Rep.-Elect Derek Lewis, Kentucky House 90 (laurel, Clay, Leslie). Program will be an update of the legislative session just ended, and plans for involvement in the upcoming November elections. Shawanee Lodge No. 546 in Shawanee, Tennessee, will have a chicken & dumpling dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 28. Meals are $7 ($5, ages 6-12) and include chicken & dumplings, mashed potatoes, green beans, slaw, rolls, dessert and drink. Carry out available. Proceeds benefit the local volunteer fire department.

There will be a benefit singing at 6 p.m. on Sept. 29 at Old Fashion Church of God in Speedwell, Tennessee. Proceeds will go to help with desperate need of rent expense. Singers will be Dave Seratt, of Knoxville, and The New Life Baptist Church Choir, of Clinton, Tennessee. Everyone is welcome.

Teen Challenge from Knoxville, Tennessee will be at Living Hope Church in Harrogate on at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 30. Teen Challenge is a worldwide network of Christian faith-based corporations intended to help teenagers, adults and families with problems such as substance abuse or self-destructive behavior, it was founded by David Wilkerson. The group will be sharing inspiring songs and stories of freedom from addiction.

Cumberland Chapter No.170 of the Order of the Eastern Star will hold their monthly meeting on Oct. 1 at the Masonic Lodge Hall, located at 5195 Dr. Thomas Walker road., one mile west of Rose Hill, Virginia. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting is at 7:30 p.m.

Bee Friends, a local beekeeping group, will have a regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 4 at Walter State Community Collage in New Tazewell. Indian Creek Missionary Baptist Church will have a fish fry fundraiser for the youth from 4 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 5 — dine in or carry out. Meals are $7 and include fish, coleslaw, french fries, hush puppies, dessert and drink.

The 44th annual Dillion Asher reunion will be held Oct. 5 and 6. The reunion will be held at Pine Mountain State Resort Park in Pineville on Friday. Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. (buffet of order from menu in the dining room). Social hour and business meeting is from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Ray Harm Room. The reunion will be held at Cardinal House, Queendale in Clay County on Saturday — all day potluck picnic beginning at noon (bring a covered dish). A meeting to discuss bringing the State Senior Games to Middlesboro will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Bell County Tourism Commission, 2215 W.Cumberland Avenue, Middlesboro. The meeting is open for anyone interested.

Cumberland Gap Artists Co-op, a non-profit organization, is having its Annual Harvest Moon Gala from 2 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 13 on Colwyn Avenue in Cumberland Gap featuring art and crafts by Appalachian artists of the Tri-State area, lots of tasty food choices, wine tasting by East Tennessee wineries, great live music by Lee Warren, with rock country and gospel music and an old fashioned sock hop and cake walk. There will also be an art station for children to create art and display it, along with face painting.

Those who are mourning the death of a family member or friend are invited to attend the Griefshare video seminar at the New Beginning Baptist Church, located four miles west of Harrogate on TN 63. This non-denominational Christ-centered program features biblical teachings by nationally respected grief experts and others journeying through grief. Organizers provide you the opportunity to be around others who understand. GriefShare also offers valuable insights about building a new normal in life and renewing a new hope for the future. Volunteers are needed for the Kentucky Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (Cumberland Valley District) to read a while, play a game of checkers, discuss the day’s events, reminisce or just sit and watch TV with a local senior. Volunteers are sought at the Middlesboro Senior Citizens Center for activity assistants, answering the phone, welcoming seniors and visitors, filing, crafting, historians, entertainment, instructors in tai chi, other forms of senior exercise and a variety of educational topics for seniors. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason (GMAR) is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. Kits can be obtained at 44 different distribution points (DP) throughout the Tri-State area and at the SIGCO office, located at 502 Pennlyn Avenue in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
