On Sept. 7, students honored their grandparents with a reception in the Lone Jack School Center’s cafeteria. Melanie Mills, library media specialist/literacy facilitator, welcomed the grandparents as they signed in to enter for door prizes.
Staci Foster’s (kindergarten- through second-grade) and Jordan Amis’ (third grade) Arts & Humanities classes performed songs for the grandparents. Kindergarten students sang Grandma, Grandpa; first grade, You Are My Sunshine; second grade, The Grandparents’ Day Song; and the third grade class performed sign language to the song, Hero. A special solo was sung by one of the first grade students.
After the performances by the students, grandparents were served cookies and punch, assisted by the Lone Jack Family Youth Service Coordinator Sheila Fuson; instructional aids, Billie Fuson and Lisa Helton, and teachers, Toni Dunn, Kailee Simpson and Caitlin Goodin.
Upon conclusion of the reception, grandparents were presented with gifts the students made in Staci Foster’s Arts and Humanities classes (Ball jars with fingerprint lightning bugs that read, “You light up my life”). Door prizes, provided by the Lone Jack Family Resource Youth Service Center, were also given away.
A “Grandparents’ Day” bulletin board was displayed in the hallway with pictures of the students and their grandparents. It read, “We’re Nuts About Our Grandparents.”
