Fast start propels Union to 3-2 win over Campbellsville

CAMPBELLSVILLE — Union College senior midfielder Edwin Garcia posted his third and fourth goals of the season to lead the Bulldogs past Campbellsville University 3-2 Wednesday night.

Along with Garcia, freshman Jezreel Soares made his collegiate debut in the 74th minute scoring what turned out to be the winning goal for Union with an open net.

The win improves Union to 3-1 on the year while Campbellsville is now 1-2. The Tigers received votes in the most recent NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.

THE TURNING POINT

The Bulldogs controlled the play in the first half, but Campbellsville found the equalizer late in the period. Garcia put Union up 2-1 in the 54th minute, and Soares captured the eventual game-winning goal in the 74th minute.

Soares came off the bench to net the game-winning goal for the first goal of his career.

Garcia scored the opening goal 34 seconds into the game getting the Bulldogs off on a fast start.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy opponent,” said Edwin Garcia on the Campbellsville Tigers. “It’s never easy coming to a team’s field, but we knew what we needed to do. The team was unbelievable today. Everyone did their job, Jezreel comes off the bench and changed the game completely. He was just at a different level tonight. Scoring the two goals against a top team in the country is great, but winning feels even better. Hopefully, we keep this energy going for upcoming games.”

BULLDOG NOTES

This was the first time Union played Campbellsville since 2005. The squads tied 1-1 in Barbourville.

Garcia leads the Bulldogs in goals with four for the season

This is the first time this season Union defeated a team mentioned in the top-25 poll.

Union opens up Appalachian Athletic Conference play Saturday, traveling to Montreat, North Carolina to face Montreat College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
