WILLIAMSBURG — Union College’s early lead was no match for the University of the Cumberland’s offense as the Patriots rallied for a 2-1, double-overtime decision on Saturday.

Eden Gumbs continued his stellar freshman year, scoring his third goal in the ninth minute as he found the upper right corner of the net from the 18-yard line.

Cumberlands controlled the play in the second half, putting pressure on the Bulldog defense before finally scoring in the 83rd minute to push the game into overtime.

STAT OF THE GAME

University of the Cumberland’s double-overtime, golden goal by Joel Caldwell in the 102nd minute secured the Patriots 2-1 victory over Union.

QUOTABLE

“We started fast and it was a great way to start the game,” said head coach Jonathan Shaw. “It was quite comfortable for most of it, but we took our foot off the gas once we scored early and didn’t go for the kill like we should have. Then, the long lightning strike happened, and we switched off and conceded.”

BULLDOG NOTES

Cumberlands outshot Union 25-8 (10-4 on goal) in the match.

This is the first meeting the Bulldogs have lost to Cumberlands since 2012, tying the Patriots in 2015.

NEXT FOR THE BULLDOGS

Union stays on the road paying a visit to Campbellsville University on Wednesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
