Middlesboro School Board sets tax rates

The Middlesboro Board of Education regular meeting occurred on Aug. 21. Students Sophie Bennett, Madison Green and Middlesboro High School Choir Director Elizabeth Edwards were recognized by the board for their success as members of the NAFME All National Choir.

Hershel Ernest, author of the book This Is Chess, Not Checkers, shared with the board information about his book. He stated this book is a business model that teenagers can apply to their lives and increase their levels of success.

Jane Cambron, Middlesboro High School Youth Career Connect Teacher, shared an update of her program with the board and a publication that has been created regarding the program.

The board established a tax rate for 2018 for Real Estate 51.1 cents and Personal Property Rate of 51.1 cents and Motor Vehicle rate of 56 cents in accordance with KRS 160.470. The established 2017 Real Estate Rate was 51.4 cents and Personal Property Rate was 51.4 cents.

Next, the Board approved the Social Worker grant that is partially funded by the Elgin Children’s Foundation and the Middlesboro Independent School District.

Hannah Spangler, Middlesboro High School teacher of mathematics, shared information about a grant from Qualcom Wireless. The board approved entering into a Memorandum of Agreement, which is managed by Southeast/Southcentral Cooperative. The board congratulated her on writing the grant.

The evening closed with the announcement of the next regular board meeting being scheduled for Sept. 18 before the board entered into Executive Session.
