BARBOURVILLE — Union College’s Kendrick Furness and Bradley Elkins came away with Mid-South Conference (MSC) Appalachian Division player of the week honors after their standout performances in Thursday’s 46-7 win over visiting Cincinnati Christian University (Ohio).
The MSC announced Monday that Furness is the Offensive Player of the Week and Elkins the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Furness was near perfect in the pocket, as he connected on 13-of-15 passes for 245 yards and four touchdowns. His touchdown passes covered 23, 51, 26, and 15 yards. Furness also ran for 10 yards on one carry.
“It was nice to see Kendrick get off to a good start,” said head coach Andre Linn. “You never know how a player is going to respond until they get out there on the field. He took what he has learned and made it happen on Saturday.”
The 245 yards passing is a career high for Furness.
Elkins served admirably as the Bulldogs’ punter, booting the ball four times for a total of 173 yards. Along with his 43.3 yards-per-punt average, Elkins had a long punt of 58 yards and pinned the Eagles inside the 20-yard line once.
In addition to his work as a punter, Elkins caught five passes for 38 yards in the win. He currently ranks 12th all-time in program history with 85 career receptions.
“He is one of those players that had a ball in his hands all the time when he was growing up,” Linn said of Elkins. “He can do most anything with a football, and he gets the most out of his ability.”
This marks the first time either Furness or Elkins has received this award.
Union returns to action Saturday when it plays at Cumberland University. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
