After a year of buildup and anticipation, the fourth consecutive Levitt AMP Your City Music Series is set to hit Middlesboro this Thursday with its first performance.
Last year, the Daily News featured a bio of every performer before they took the stage as well as an interview with them on the night of their show. This tradition will continue this year as well.
First up is Devon Gilfillian.
Gilfillian, according to his official website, has his sound rooted in gospel-blues and southern soul. Raised in a musical family, Gilfillian was a singer from a young age. At the age of 14, he discovered the electric guitar. A love of classic rock and older sounds were instilled in him.
While in college, Gilfillian was in a cover band and was playing three-hour long shows at local venues where he would cover all the various bands and sounds that influenced him. Over time, the need to create his own original music brought Gilfillian to Nashville to start work on his original content.
In 2016, Gilfillian cut his first self-titled EP. The album is described as “funky” and a mix of his own voice injected by with his various influences.
Opening for Gilfillian is the uniquely titled Joslyn Sweet and the Compression. Newer on the scene, the band — led by Sweet — is also a funk and soul act and should prove to be an invigorating pairing with Gilfillian.
The show starts at 6:30 p.m. at the newly revamped Levitt stage on Cumberland Avenue.
