The Bell County Board of Education will have a special-called MEETING at 2 p.m. on June 28 at the Bell County Administration building in Pineville.

In honor of Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month, the Bell County Animal Shelter is offering half price fees for cat and kitten adoption in June. The fee is $35 and includes spay or neuter, vet check and first round of shots. The Friends of the Bell County Animal Shelter (FOS) will pay the other $35.
JULY 3
Pineville Chapter No. 89 ORDER of the Eastern Star will meet at 7 p.m. on July 3 at the Masonic building in Pineville. The meeting will be preceded with meal at 6 p.m.
JULY 8
Indian Creek Baptist Church’s regular monthly SINGING will be held July 8 featuring The Beason Family, of Maynardville, Tennessee and other. Everyone welcome.
JULY 10
The Bell County Cooperative Extension Service will host a TRY IT TUESDAY class at 1 p.m. on July 10. Participants will be making a decoupage flower pot. Everyone needs to bring their own terra-cotta pot. To register, call 606-337-2376.

The Division of Mine Safety, located at 174 Ballpark Road in Harlan, will host the following RETRAINING classes from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: Surface, July 12; MET, July 16; and underground, July 16 and 17.
JULY 14, 21
Middlesboro Elks Lodge No. 119 will host an ACADEMIC QUIZ CONTEST for school children beginning at 10 a.m. on on July 21 at the Elks building, located at 1670 North 25th Street in Middlesboro (1/4 mile behind Walmart). Subjects will be American history and U.S. geography. Prizes will be awarded. Open to the first 75 students who pre-register (must be done by parent/guardian) from the following schools: Middlesboro, Pineville, Bell County or Gateway Christian (seventh, eighth, ninth grades or age 16 by day of contest. Pre-registration is from 2-5 p.m. on July 14 at the Elks building — detailed contest rules will be provided at registration, any of which will be subject to change on day of contest. The Lone Jack High School ALUMNI REUNION will be held July 14 at Bell County High School. Registration begins at 4 p.m., and group pictures and dinner at 5:15 p.m. Memorial and recognition will be after dinner. Graduating classes ending in years of 3 and 8 will be recognized. One-day VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL at First Christian Church in Middlesborough will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on July 14. This year’s theme is “Camp Out — Getting S’More of Jesus!” All area youth (preschool through rising sixth grade are invited to attend. For transportation, call 606-248-2517.

The Bell County Cooperative Extension Service will offer a free 4-H CLOVERBUD CAMP from 10 a.m. to noon July 19-20 at Veteran’s Park (U.S. Hwy 119) in Pineville for ages 4-8. Participants will meet community helpers including: The Forestry Department (with Smokey Bear appearance), fire department and sheriff’s office. There will also be hands-on craft activities. The Lincoln School HOMECOMING will be held July 19-22, sponsored by Friends of Lincoln, Inc. The reunion will open July 19 with an invitation to the free Levitt AMP Middlesboro Music Series on Cumberland Avenue beginning at 6 p.m. (headliner appears around 7 p.m.) — bring your own chair. On July 20, events include Tee Time at 9 a.m. at the Middlesboro Country Club — bring your own clubs (meet at Lincoln School Park to convoy to the club); hospitality room at the Middlesboro High School cafeteria from 3 to 6 p.m. (free refreshments and information about events); Dance Party (adults 21 and up) 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Civic Center on North 30th Street with the “Christmas in July” theme — entry fee is $12 person (exact change required). On July 21, events at the original site of Lincoln School will be held (concessions will be provided by the Church of the True Living God of Holiness). The schedule includes: Free fashion show at 1:30 p.m. at the Middlesboro High School Arts Auditorium; Adult Dance for ages 21 and up with the theme “Academy Awards Come to Middlesboro” — entry fee is $15 per person (exact change required) and attire is after five or Sunday best. On July 22, Sunday Church Service with the theme “We’ve Come This Far By Faith” at 11 a.m. at the Middlesboro High School Arts Auditorium.

The Bell County UK Cooperative Extension Service will host SUPER STAR CHEF, a two-day cooking camp for ages 8-15, at 10 a.m. on July 23 and 24 at the Bell County Extension Office. VOLUNTEERS are needed for the Kentucky Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (Cumberland Valley District) to read a while, play a game of checkers, discuss the day’s events, reminisce or just sit and watch TV with a local senior. VOLUNTEERS are sought at the Middlesboro Senior Citizens Center for activity assistants, answering the phone, welcoming seniors and visitors, filing, crafting, historians, entertainment, instructors in tai chi, other forms of senior exercise and a variety of educational topics for seniors. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason (GMAR) is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. Kits can be obtained at 44 different distribution points (DP) throughout the Tri-State area and at the SIGCO office, located at 502 Pennlyn Avenue in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. The American RED CROSS is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
