June is designated as Great Outdoors Month, and Bell County and the tri-state area offer all of the activities one could think to celebrate and enjoy the outdoors.

School is out, Spring has sprung and everything is green again.

Middlesboro is one of the most unique geographical locations in the country, with the city being the only one in America to reside in a meteor crater. The almost 365-degree view of the mountains surrounding the city helps you realize the fact you are indeed standing in a crater.

And you don’t need to be in woods to enjoy the outdoors.

Bell County Tourism, Middlesboro Main Street (formerly Discover Downtown Middlesboro) and its partners are in the continuous process of revitalizing the downtown area with various events and projects.

Some beautification has already taken place up and down Cumberland Avenue, and there are hopes to continues the process. This beautification only helps to make strolling downtown all the more pleasant.

If it’s the hustle and bustle of the city you wish to escape, Bell County and the tri-state are are very giving when it comes to just how much outdoor activities are available with just a stones throw.

Cumberland Gap National Park is situated at the perfect meeting point between Bell and Claiborne County. It offers all visitors access to the history of the regions as well and numerous hiking, biking and even horse riding trials as well as various scenic viewing spots — such as the famous Pinnacle Overlook.

Between Middlesboro and Pineville, Pine Mountain State Park also offers hiking as well as camping and lodging. They are also constantly providing unique entertainment such as park produced plays, specialized hikes and programs that take advantage of what the park has to offer.

Then of course, in Virginia, Wilderness Road State Park is dedicated to recreating the historical pioneer times as well as offering programs and events throughout the year.

Parks aren’t the only outdoor activity to indulge in either. Fishing. kayaking and ATV trails are all things you can enjoy right now.
