Collins advances to state

Middlesboro senior Owen Collins finished as the 13th region runner-up in boys singles. He entered as the number two seed and received a first round bye. He defeated South Laurel’s Taylor Payne 6-4,6-0 in round two and Bell County’s Jaden Pankoiuski 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals to earn a trip to next week’s state tournament. Monday, he outlasted Whitley County’s Reese Halcomb 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 in the semis to reach the championship match. Top seed Chris Tan of Whitley County was able to defeat Collins Monday night to win the championship.

Pineville’s girls doubles team of Sarah Combs and Makenzie Fuson won their first round match 6-0, 6-2 over Knox Central’s team of King and Gibson. The Lady Lions were eliminated in round two by Whitley County’s Shaw and Helton.

Bell County’s boys doubles team of Ethan Murray and Ryan Lambdin made a strong run in the 13th Region Tournament. They knocked off Barbourville’s Carnes and Walker in round one 6-1, 6-0 and got past Middlesboro’s team of Bowling and Lawson 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 in round two. Knox Central’s team of Wilson and Koen eliminated Murray and Lambdin 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
