There will be a YARD SALEto benefit the Tri-State Youth Choir from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 5 in the parking lot of Livesay Middle School in Harrogate, Tennessee. Anyone may rent a space/table for $20; if your proceeds are donated to the choir, the fee is waived. Proceeds go toward the choir’s mission trip this summer. League of Women Voters will hold a CANDIDATE FORUM at 7 p.m. on May 10 at the Middlesboro Library for those running for mayor of Middlesboro. Following the forum, light refreshments will be served and there will be time to speak one-on-one with the candidates.
The Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation (KHIC) and the Kentucky Entrepreneur Network (KEN) are presenting a program designed for people interested in obtaining an entrepreneurial mindset, based on the book “Who Owns the Ice House” by Clifton Taulbert. The 18th Annual RAID AT MARTIN’S STATION will be held at Wilderness Road State Park May 11-13 featuring an 18th century Artisan Fair, historical demonstrations, local food vendors and two re-enactment battles at 1 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on May 12. Registration is now open for the second annual “Tour De Kingdom Come,” a 36-mile road race which includes the scenic Little Shepherd trail, and first annual “Dash for Cash,” an up hill 2.7 mile time trial, scheduled May 19 and 20. A multi-event discount is offered for registering for both events. If you pre-register for “Tour De Kingdom Come” then you can select “Dash for Cash” time trial event for only $10 more. “Love Makes A Home: The Life of Rebecca Boone,” a play by Kiesa Kay, will be presented at 8 p.m. on June 9 at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. The play features the acting of Patti Louise Smith, and historically authentic tunes played by renowned old-time fiddler Bruce Greene.
The annual ART EXTRAVAGANZA FESTIVAL, hosted by the Cumberland Gap Artists Co-op, will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 2 in Cumberland Gap (521 Colwyn Avenue) featuring Appalachian art and crafts from the Tri-State area with food, music and wine tasting by the Seven Springs Winery. PLANTS SALES are underway for the spring season. The Bell County Extension Office is offering a great variety of some of your favorite produce. Plants and pricing are as follows: Strawberries (All Star and Early Glow), bundles of 25 for $3.25; blueberries (Bluecrop and Patriot, at least one of each variety should be planted together to allow for cross-pollination), $6 per plant; blackberries (Natchez), $3 per plant; raspberries (TulaMagic), $3 per plant; asparagus(Jersey Knight), $1 per plant; and onions (Candy), $4 for a bundle of 60. Orders are now being accepted. Supplies for all of these plants are very limited. Contact the Bell County Extension Office at 606-337-2376 to place your order. Orders will be available for pick-up at the Extension Office in early April (notification will be sent).

VOLUNTEERS are needed for the Kentucky Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (Cumberland Valley District) to read a while, play a game of checkers, discuss the day’s events, reminisce or just sit and watch TV with a local senior. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason (GMAR) is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. Kits can be obtained at 44 different distribution points (DP) throughout the Tri-State area and at the SIGCO office, located at 502 Pennlyn Avenue in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. The American RED CROSS is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
