At the historic Middlesboro Country Club, local golfers teed off to help students attend college. Over a dozen teams took part in the first annual Golf Scramble for Students held by Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College (SKCTC) on April 13.

The event raised more than $14,000 and featured 16 four-player teams. Proceeds benefit the Southeast Education Foundation — which supports student scholarships. Appalachian Regional Healthcare and the Kentucky Coal Academy served as corporate sponsors for this year’s tournament. Mountain Comprehensive Health Care was a gold sponsor.

The first place winning team was KCEOC Community Action Partnership: Dustin Smith, Corey Chestnut, David Miller AND Billy Taylor. LMU—David Gardner, George Duncan, Brad Davis and Mike Smith—took home second.

Simpson & Sons — Kevin Simpson, Jeff Tingle, Matt Smith, Jon Estep — won third. Kyle Nelson with BD’s Mongolian Grill won the first flight putting contest, and Kelly VanKirk with People’s Choice Pharmacy won for the second.

Matt Smith with Simpson & Sons won the longest drive. Dustin Smith with KCEOC won closest to the pin.

“The true winners were our students,” says SKCTC President Vic Adams. “We are grateful to our sponsors and to all the teams who participated in this worthwhile event.”
