The Middlesboro baseball team started off on a good note in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Monday. Fresh off a loss in the 13th Region All A tournament, the Yellow Jackets rebounded with a 10-2 victory over Whetstone out of Columbus, Ohio.

Tyler McCullough paced the team at the plate going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Brandon Helton and Joshua Arnold cleaned up the back end of the line-up — both going 2-for-4. Helton finished with one run, while Arnold ended with a run and an RBI.

Collier Elkins scored two runs after being walked three times. Tyshawn Simpson scored two runs as a courtesy runner for Jacob Mike.

Jacob Spurlock earned the victory on the mound. Through 5 2/3 innings, the senior finished the game with six strikeouts while giving up no hits and walking only one batter. He allowed both runs. McCullough and Elkins also saw time on the mound.

The Middlesboro defense limited Whetstone at the plate allowing only two hits during the game. Jacob Price paced the team finishing the night with a two-run RBI triple. Davis Kleen also tallied a hit during the game.

Spencer Ball and Jeffrey Golding each scored runs for the Braves.

Middlesboro jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. After reaching base on a walk, Elkins scored on a Mike single to give the Jackets the lead. Simpson scored on a bases loaded walk to give Middlesboro the two-run lead.

The Jackets added three more runs in the fourth inning. A two-run RBI triple by McCullough increased the Middlesboro lead to 4-0 with only one out on the board. The senior later scored on the Mike sacrifice to balloon the Jacket lead to 5-0.

Middlesboro never faced much danger in the final three innings with the Jackets outscoring Whetstone 5-2 throughout the remainder of the game to secure the eight-run victory over the Braves.
