Lady Cats fall to Whitley County

The Bell County girls basketball team didn’t end the regular season in the fashion they would’ve hoped. The Lady Cats couldn’t get the offense started as they fell 51-37 to Whitley County on Friday.

With the loss, Bell County ends the regular season with a 19-9 record as they head to the 52nd District Tournament.

It was Abbey Estes and Kaelie Frazier who paced the Lady Colonels on Friday. Estes ended the night tied for a game-high 15 points. Frazier finished with 12 points. Seirra Feltner chipped in nine points.

Brittney Cupp a was one rebound shy of finishing with a double-double for the Lady Cats. She tallied a game-high 15 points and nine rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field.

Brittany Davis added 10 points to the final tally while also shooting at a 50 percent clip. Abby Harris scored eight points on the night.

With 3:37 remaining in the third, Whitney County led Bell 39-27. The score would remain intact until the buzzer sounded at the end of the frame.

Feltner opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to increase the Lady Colonel lead to 42-27. Davis answered with a 3-pointer of her own to return the deficit to 12.

Back-to-back baskets from Frazier and Feltner increased the Whitley lead to 46-30 with over six minutes remaining in the game. Free throws from Davis cut the lead to 14.

Consecutive free throws from Frazier and Feltner gave the Lady Colonels a 50-32 lead with 1:39 left to go in regulation. A free throw from Estes increased the lead to 19.

Davis ended the game with a 3-pointer and layup to cut the final deficit to 14.

Bell County (19-9) opens the 52nd District Tournament against Harlan (15-14) at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday at Middlesboro.

Whitley County (23-5) opened the 50th District Tournament against Corbin (8-22) on Monday.
