Throughout the years, the holidays have somewhat lost touch with their family-centered origins, as many find themselves caught up in the chaotic seasonal bustle. However, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park provided visitors with the opportunity to abandon this stress and relive the warm-hearted memories of Christmas past on Saturday.

“My daughters and I really enjoy the event every year. It has become one of our favorite Christmas traditions, and I hope it grows and continues year after year,” said Bell County native Victoria Rains, who makes an effort to attend the program with her family each year.

The Taste of Christmas Past program has quickly become an annual favorite among locals, as the park is transformed into an authentic representation of the traditions and celebrations which old-fashioned Appalachian families focused on during the holiday season.

Park-goers, both young and old, seemed rather intrigued by the unique program, as they were able to rekindle many forgotten Appalachian traditions alongside their loved ones, all while enjoying warm cocoa and sugar cookies in an authentic cabin-like setting.

“This program is indeed a favorite among locals. It’s delightful seeing families, many comprised of several generations, participating,” said Park Ranger Pam Eddy. “The hustle and bustle of the season is forgotten as ornaments are made by hand, showcasing love and warmth.”
