The Student Chapter of the American Association of Public Health Veterinarians at Lincoln Memorial University-College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM) hosted a low-cost community rabies clinic at the Scott County Public Animal Shelter in Virginia on Nov. 5. A total of 50 dogs and 18 cats were vaccinated for rabies that were brought to the clinic by local pet owners.

Dr. Gil Patterson, program manager for the Center for Animal and Human Health in Appalachia (CAHA), helped coordinate the event and administer the vaccinations. Students had the opportunity to practice physical examinations and communication skills while preparing dogs and cats to receive their rabies vaccinations. They also educated clients on the importance of vaccinating for rabies and heartworm prevention. In addition, the clinic offered an opportunity for local pets to easily receive the State-required rabies vaccine at a low cost.
