Deputies kill murder suspect who fired shots

MONTICELLO, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky State Police say sheriff’s deputies killed a murder suspect who had shot at them.

State police Trooper Lloyd Cochran says in a statement that 57-year-old Paul E. Dolen of Monticello had two handguns and a rifle when he was shot by Wayne County deputies on Friday night. Detectives believe Dolen had fatally shot his wife, 55-year-old Sandra D. Dolen, and a cousin, 62-year-old Russell F. Dolen.

Deputies located Paul Dolen in a barn on the family property. The statement says after Dolen shot at the deputies, they returned fire, killing him.

The three bodies were taken to a medical examiner for autopsies.

Cochran says the deputies were not injured.

The races of Dolen and the deputies involved were unavailable. Cochran didn’t immediately respond to a message left Sunday.

Renters almost always lose eviction cases

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A new report says renters in Kentucky’s second-largest city almost always lose when landlords try to evict them.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports a study by the Lexington Fair Housing Council examined all eviction cases in the city from 2005 to 2016. The report found of the 68,260 filings for evictions, tenants won just three cases. A judge sided with the landlord in 65 percent of the cases. Another 33 percent were dismissed before it got to court. The rest of the cases have no definitive judgment.

The report says city officials should explore ways to reduce evictions and streamline services for tenants. The city set up a homelessness task force five years ago that resulted in a new office to coordinate homeless services.

Federal grant to pay for repairs of western Ky. dam

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The federal government will spend $3 million to fix a nearly 180-year-old western Kentucky dam that affects the water supply for nearly 50,000 people.

Multiple media outlets report U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell announced the grant earlier this week.

The dam was first built in 1838 with rocks held in place by wood. The dam is deteriorating, and repair plans call for using more boulders and holding them in place with wood pilings driven into the riverbed.

The dam helps provide water for nearly 50,000 people. If the dam fails, the water level would sink so low some counties and large employers would no longer have water.

The grant was not possible without a 2016 federal law that transferred ownership of several dams along the Green River to local entities.

Neigh-sayers welcome at this pet-friendly Kentucky motel

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (AP) — A Canadian horse has had the opportunity to watch television for the first time at a pet-friendly Kentucky motel.

Lindsey Partridge of Ontario, Canada, told The Lexington Herald-Leader she stopped to check in Oct. 4 at the Super 8 in Georgetown on her way to compete in the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover competition. Partridge says she received approval when she jokingly inquired of the clerk if the motel’s pet-friendly policy would apply to her horse.

Partridge made a video of Blizz, a retired Thoroughbred mare who raced as Here Comes Adri. She also simulated a check-in experience, and conducted a photo op in the room. Partridge says she then took Blizz and her two other horses to Kentucky Horse Park, the local equine motel of choice.

Blizz took third in the competition’s trail division.

Ky. schedules exam for prospective PVA candidates

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky revenue officials say an examination has been scheduled for people interested in getting on next year’s election ballot in hopes of serving as a property valuation administrator.

The Department of Revenue says the exam is set for Nov. 17 at the Holiday Inn Louisville East. The more than three hour exam begins at 9 a.m.

To ensure adequate seating, the department is requesting that participants register in advance for the exam.

The exam originally was to be held in Frankfort, but the site was moved to Louisville.

Under state law, anyone wanting to appear on the ballot as a PVA candidate has to hold a certificate issued by the revenue department. That certificate shows the candidate has been examined by the department and is qualified for the office.

U of L plans Sustainability Week events

LOUISVILLE (AP) — The University of Louisville is planning activities later this month to raise awareness for responsible environmental stewardship.

The university says its Sustainability Week activities are planned from Oct. 23 to Oct. 29.

On Oct. 24, a Local Food Showcase at The Ville Grill on campus will highlight locally sourced food. The next day, a Sustainability Day Fair is set for the Humanities Quad. It will feature booths and information about what UofL and community groups are doing to advance sustainability.

On Oct. 27, a sustainability roundtable discussion will be about the “Global Politics of Climate Change” with UofL political science professor Rodger Payne.
