Friends of the Bell County Animal Shelter is sponsoring a HOWL-O-WEEN dog walk and pet costume contest on at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 14 at First Baptist Church (rear parking lot), located at 2300 Cumberland Avenue. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Dog walk entry fee is $20; students, $15 (includes T-shirt). If you’re not walking but want to enter the costume contest, the fee will be $10 per dog. The walk will be 2.3 miles through Middlesboro and will benefit FOS. Collect treats along the way.
The Cumberland Gap Artists Co-op will present the HARVEST MOON GALA from 4-9 p.m. on Oct. 14 on Colwyn Avenue in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee featuring local art and crafts, live music, good food, wine tasting and Christmas and fall bazaar tents.
Pine Mountain State Resort Park will host “A Flutter in the Night” at 8 p.m. on Oct. 14. Park naturalist and master falconer Mitch Whitaker will present an evening program involving BATS AND OWLS. After the two part event (complete with live owls during the presentation) participants will embark on an evening stroll searching for both creatures. Thomas Walker High School will host a POKER RUN, with fall festival king and queen candidates Tanna Whitt and Peyton Redinger, beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 15. The ride begins at Rose Hill Car Wash and travels through Middlesboro, Harlan, Pennington Gap, Jonesville and ends with a hot dog dinner at The Whitt Farm on Flatwoods Road. Dinners will be available for $5 per person (two hot dogs, bag of chips, can drink and dessert). The fee is $20 per bike, $5 per passenger. Prizes will be 25 percent of total entry fees. Showcase your talent and win prizes: First place – $75 plus one hour dance party from the Pineapple Tea Room; second place – $50 plus $25 gift certificate from Gap Creek Coffee House; third place – $25 plus large specialty pizza from Angelo’s in the Gap. Bring your carved pumpkin to Festival Park (downtown on Colwyn Street) by 6 p.m. on Oct. 30. Pumpkins will be displayed Oct. 30-31. Trick or treat hours are from 5-8 p.m. on Oct. 31. Don’t forget to write name and phone number on backside of pumpkin. The open of the pumpkin should be on the bottom (using this method allows organizers to place the carved pumpkin over a candle).

October is ADOPT A SHELTER DOG MONTH, and Friends of the Bell County Animal Shelter (FOS) will pay half of the adoption fee for any dog adopted from the shelter in the month of October. The fee is normally $70, so for the entire month of October anyone who wants to adopt a dog, they will only have to pay $35. That price includes a spay or neuter and the dogs first round of shots.

Learn to fly fish — choosing equipment, fly selection, reading a stream, casting, hooking and landing a fish in the solitude of the autumn mountains. Free saliva-based drug testing kits are provided and sponsored through UNITE and Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO). Give Me a Reason (GMAR) is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. The American RED CROSS is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
