The 43rd annual Dillion Asher REUNION will be held Oct. 6-7. The reunion will be held on Friday in the Ray Harm Room at Pine Mountain State Resort Park in Pineville with dinner from 5:30-7 p.m. in the dining room of the lodge, and a social gathering and business meeting at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the reunion will be held at Cardinal House in Queendale (close to Dillion Asher’s log cabin). There will be an all-day potluck picnic beginning at noon (bring a covered dish). Attendees are encouraged to bring old photos, albums or any information you would like to share with the genealogical family to the reunion. The Bell County Chamber of Commerce will present the second annual CAR SHOW and first annual CHILI COOK OFF from 2-6 p.m. on Oct. 7 on Cumberland Avenue, 19th Street to 21st Street. Registration for the car show is from 1-4 p.m., and the entry fee is $20 (trophies given to winners). Enter your chili for the cook off for $25 (winner will receive $250). Friends of the Bell County Animal Shelter is sponsoring a HOWL-O-WEEN dog walk and pet costume contest on at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 14 at First Baptist Church (rear parking lot), located at 2300 Cumberland Avenue. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Dog walk entry fee is $20; students, $15 (includes T-shirt). If you’re not walking but want to enter the costume contest, the fee will be $10 per dog. The walk will be 2.3 miles through Middlesboro and will benefit FOS. Collect treats along the way.
The Cumberland Gap Artists Co-op will present the HARVEST MOON GALA from 4-9 p.m. on Oct. 14 on Colwyn Avenue in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee featuring local art and crafts, live music, good food, wine tasting and Christmas and fall bazaar tents.
Pine Mountain State Resort Park will host “A Flutter in the Night” at 8 p.m. on Oct. 14. Park naturalist and master falconer Mitch Whitaker will present an evening program involving BATS AND OWLS. Learn to fly fish — choosing equipment, fly selection, reading a stream, casting, hooking and landing a fish in the solitude of the autumn mountains. Give Me a Reason (GMAR) is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say no when tempted or offered drugs. The American RED CROSS is seeking volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single and multi-family home fires in the Lake Cumberland service area which includes Casey, Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, Russell, Pulaski, Wayne, McCreary, Whitley, Laurel, Clay, Knox, Bell and Harlan counties. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers respond to assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning.
